Ambassadorial List: The Four Omitted States Have No Qualified Candidates - FG

The four states omitted from President Muhammadu Buhari’s list of ambassadorial nominees sent to the National Assembly had no qualified candidates, Babachir Lawal, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has said during an interaction with journalists in Abuja at the weekend. The four states without nominees are Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Ondo and Plateau. “Specific criteria had been set by the Presidency to pick nominees and the four states without nominees have no career diplomats in the Foreign Service who met the objective,” the SGF said. “Four states didn’t make it one way or the other; however, not necessarily on the criteria of seniority. There are criteria and qualifications that are required to post you to go and represent Nigeria, not just because while in the Foreign Service or the civil service you were able to make Grade Level 16 or 17, quite a number of qualifications are needed. So even if you make that retirement criteria, service length or rank cri

Former Supreme Court Judge, Niki Tobi Is Dead! (Photo)

Image
Retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Niki Tobi, has died. Tobi passed on in the early hours of Friday at the National Hospital, Abuja. His corpse was later moved to the morgue of Garki General Hospital. The retired judge had been having grave health issues since 2011. He subsequently went blind and totally lost his memory. Tobi was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2002 and retired in July 2010 after attaining the age of 70. His record of service was significantly blighted by his membership of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal, which validated the flawed 2007 presidential election that installed the late President Umaru Yar' Adua. Tobi and other members of the tribunal were said to have been heavily induced by Yar' Adua who, in his inaugural speech as president, admitted that his election was flawed. One of the promises made to him as part of the compensation for delivering a crooked verdict was that his son Ebowei Tobi, a high court jud

Alex Ekwueme, Prof. Gana, Others Advocate True Federalism, Power Devolution

Image
Dr Alex Ekwueme, Second Republic Vice-President, former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana and others, have reiterated their call for true federalism and devolution of powers to the states. They said that restructuring and resource control by regions was a panacea to end acts of uprising across the country. Ekwueme spoke in Enugu on Sunday at the 17th Annual Convention of the Igbo Youth Movement (IYM) with the theme `Nigeria, still in pursuit of true fiscal federalism’. The former vice-president, who chaired the event, said that the British colonialists had earlier divided the country to enable each region control and manage its resources without interference. “The British colonial masters divided the country in such a way that every region will operate within its constitution,” he said. The guest speaker and former Information Minister, Prof. Jerry Gana, said that the key solution to Nigeria’s problem was through true federalism and devolution of powers to state

Before They Mislead President Buhari: Dele Momodu [@Delemomodu}

Image
                                              Fellow Nigerians, let me say categorically and emphatically that our dear beloved country is dangerously haemorrhaging again and this perfidious drift must be halted urgently before we all end up in perdition. Anyone telling President Muhammadu Buhari that all is well or that his government is moving in the right direction is either lying or pretending like a rattlesnake. And there are many scorpions around ready to mislead every government and move on effortlessly when things fall apart. For sure President Buhari possesses the ability to move this country in the right direction and lead us to where we want to be but right now it is not happening and the soul of the people palpitates! I’ve been on several television and radio interviews in the past one week and the commonest question is on the performance of our President. The general perception is that the change mantra seems not to be working and the world is worried beca

FG To Supply More Relief To States

The Federal Government, Saturday, said it is finalizing a conditional Budget Support Facility to provide financial relief to State Governments based on the states meeting a set of stringent fiscal conditions. The Finance Ministry, in a statement in Abuja, said the facility is aimed at providing support to the states to help them overcome their financial challenges. The Ministry of Finance said the states would only be able to access the facility if they meet a stringent 22-point reform agenda called the Fiscal Sustainability Plan (FSP), that was approved by state governments, the National Executive Council, last month. According to the Finance Ministry, the FSP encompasses a framework of reform measures including the requirement for the states to publish audited financial statements and budgets, biometric and Bank Verification Number (BVN) payroll review exercises to sanitise payroll costs, as well as limits on recurrent expenditure levels. Other reforms, the Ministry
