OAU : STUDENT LEADER CLEARS AIR, CONGRESSIONAL RESOLUTIONS ARE DECLARED BY THE PRESIDENT
A student from the Department of Philosophy, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile - Ife, Akomolafe Jide Petkoff popularly known as Aare of Peace has clear air on the raging debate issues on campus.
Petkoff who is the Media Aide to NANS National Director of Campus Affairs and currently the National President of federation of Igede Students Union said Congressional resolutions are declared by the President.
In his words, as much I do not subscribe with altering the Union's congressional resolutions dated 8th June, 2017. It is very important to note that following the first congressional release from the Secretary General, it has been obvious that alteration has been the challenges the congress resolutions faced ranging from an alteration claimed to be from the ASG of the Union to another alteration changing "President declared" to "Congress resolved". As much as I have been a member of various congresses and presided over various congresses, resolutions are declared by the President who by extension stands as the Presiding Officer for the Congress based on the submission on ground. So why the uproar on the diction used by the Secretary General?
Another student from the department of Philosophy who wants to be addressed as Lekan Igbasan further noted that Presidential discretional power by Convention is enough to stamp the legitimacy of a Congress resolution.
Hear Igbasan further, The TY administration use discretionary power during the 2.5 CGPA saga during the Ibiyemi Vs Honourable Seun issue. Again, the Show baba led electoral Commission use discretionary power to overrule the argument of the leftist to scrap 2.5 CGPA in the last OAU Students Union Election. The Congressional resolution stand and the Parliament Speaker (T BAMS) remains suspended indefinitely, Lekan asserted.
What students should be clamouring for is constitutional amendment as Congresses remains in the hand of the Presider in theory. There should be a constitutional amendment tailored towards stipulating the rule of moderating Congresses like we have rules of parliamentary debate, Abbah Francis, a parliamentarian from the Faculty of Social Sciences said.
