Libya, A ‘Haven’ For Senior ISIS Commanders

Several senior commanders from Islamic State have relocated to Libya from Iraq and Syria recently. This is according to a top Libyan intelligence officer, Ismail Shukri. The official made this known at BBC News night. He also stated that increasing number of fighters have arrived the city of Sirte, the hometown of late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, a city ISIS is said to have taken control of last year. They are said to have support from some loyalists of the former regime.
United States military officials have stated that about 3000 ISIS fighters have made a territory of Sirte, where it carries out its attacks against the civilian targets. And recently the US Secretary of Defense Ash carter has called for a 50 per cent spending increase for the anti ISIS campaign.
In Libya, there have been disagreements between rival administrations in spite of efforts by the United Nations for unity. This has largely hindered the fight against ISIS terrorists. Shukri also indicated that the majority of ISIS fighters in Sirte, about 70 percent are foreigners. Most of them are Tunisians, followed by Egyptians, Sudanese and a few Algerians.
He further said that the ISIS commanders had come to Libya under pressure from international airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, stating that they viewed Libya as a ‘safe haven.’ Media reports also reveal that the authorities in Misrata state that they are preparing an offensive against ISIS militants in Sirte.
